CASE STUDY: MANCHESTER 2002

The Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002 pioneered an innovative approach to social and economic legacy programmes. Lesley Giddins managed a £20m government funded regeneration programme which included the Pre-Volunteer Programme, arts, education, young people’s and business projects. Sport England, who invested £135M of lottery funding in facilites for the Games, supported their investment with a ‘Wider Opportunities Programme’. This programme was managed by Kate Egford who worked with both the Games office and a range of national and regional organisations to use the hook of the Games as a means of increasing active participation in sport.
